New research indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a major health publication points out that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying these treatments need to be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a return to starting mass in about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Experts suggest the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.
The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful return of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
